3 Pennies

Well, there's all that glue job hoopla...but I'm still collecting money.

Found two pennies last night and a penny today. Tomorrow I'm thinking of checking the composition of my collection.

Good Cop/Bad Cop

I think pictures should tell the rest of the story.

The Glue Job (Act III)

(or: "And that's why you never deface federal property")

Yes, the Glue Job story isn't quite over. Our story picks up when there was a comment posed saying how I had possibly missed another missing sign that had been put up.

So I did a little detective work. On my street I came across a US relay post box.

And noticed something on it.

Taking the scrap home, I compared it to the font and type of the sign I had saved. It was a match.

To be continued.....

MISSING

Ah. The Glue Job. Take Two. So I come home rather late from a party Sunday night and it's dark so I don't really notice anything unusual about the entrance to my building.
This morning when I went to work, I see a missing sign taped next to the building's door. And another one right by the bus stop.
Funny! :)

Sunday Tally

On Sunday, I found 8 cents. It looked like there was only going to be one penny and I was going to comment that my life is like that. Just me. Alone. But I got foiled.

I found six more cents that evening at the Bleecker station. On Saturday night I found two pennies near Loreley.

The Swiss Coin

I tried to take a pic of the coin.

Confoederatio Helvetica

So I went to the Mermaid Day parade yesterday and I thought I'd just say how zany and bizarre some of the outfits were since I didn't think I was going to find anything unusual.

Well, I got upstaged.

At the Coney Island station on the F train as I walking down the ramp to exit the station, I saw a coin. It was faded grey and I thought it looked like an odd dime.

I picked it up and saw that it was foreign....truly foreign. The inscription was "Confoederatio Helvetica" and on the back it simply had 5.

When I got home, I found out that I had picked up a coin worth 5 Swiss centimes. The date on the coin was from 1966. Bizarre....just like the parade.

Public Payphone

This is a first. I actually found money at a payphone this evening. I was at 26th and 8th avenue and the payphone right in front of Duane Reade has a ledge to rest items on. Someone had left 12 cents (1 dime and 2 pennies). Right below were another two pennies. I found two more pennies walking around the area.

The Glue Job

I gotta hand it to my friends. They are creative and ingenuous. So I found two pennies on Sunday. On Monday, one of my friends, (initials LR) asked if I noticed anything odd in my neighborhood. No. Nothing in front of my building? Nope. I mean I found a penny in front of my building but what's odd about that? I find pennies here and there. One penny isn't odd or out of the ordinary.

Well......

Apparently, she and another friend (initials AA) were scheming while I was at the movies on Saturday. AA devised a plan that would create a huge "disturbance" in the randomness of finding loose change.

AA and LR GLUED about 80 cents of change in front of my building. Impressive. Now when I picked up the one penny, I noticed it had some sort of odd adhesive stickiness covering it. I had never encountered a penny with such "filth" and was a little apprehensive to take it. This was the glue that was left over.

Where was the other change? Ahh, that's where their little plan didn't quite turn out the way they wanted it. Leaving money around in the open even if it is glued doesn't prevent some determined individual to try and take it. I guess they had taken their fill and left me with this lone penny. But I congratulate them for their efforts. Well done, ladies. :)

The Comparison (and the Drag)

So let's put one week in Denver in comparison to my most recent week here in NYC. NYC is a "cash pot". In one week in Denver I found 4 pennies. Over the past seven days in NYC I collected 89 cents! Though I must admit, tonight was a slight aberration to the normal seven odd cents I normally collect. Up until today, I had collected 24 cents -- that's still way above Denver's rate. In fact that's six times as much.

Then I found a mini pile. At the movie theatre, someone had dropped a lot of change and I guess decided not to take it. They left 63 cents. Hmm. I can see maybe leaving a penny, nickel or dime but two quarters? That's laundry money! So this was quite a good week and I'm closing in on twelve dollars.

Oh, here's a rather bizarre side note. My hairdresses also is a drag queen entertainer. I found this out on Thursday. So my friend and I were walking to the subway and were coming upon the establishment where my hairdresser performs. No sooner had I explained the whole situation then who walks out of the establishment? Yup. My hairdresser. It was if I had conjured him/her out of thin air. It took me a second to recognize him but he also recognized me. Anyway, quite a strange event.

That clean Rocky Mountain....street?

I was in Denver this past week for the SLA annual conference. Had a great time, met some other cool hip librarians and enjoyed the sights of the city. Great city! Although.....it was pretty much devoid of street change. I found a total of four pennies. I guess you gotta love New York. ;)

I should've also done my research. To take a tour of the mint in Denver you have to register a day in advance online. Showing up on Friday in person isn't really the best plan.

Anyway, back in NYC and back to some "true" street change collectin'!

Nickel-back and One

Things are picking up. Boy, that was bad.

I found a nickel and a penny this morning by Bartel Prichard Square.

Night

I found a penny near my subway entrance after coming home from a birthday party last night. Working on that night vision.

Change Dysfunction

So I hadn't found any change since Sunday! Unbelievable. I thought I was going through some change dysfunction there. The drought ended today. Though barely. I found two pennies at the Whitehall post office and another one at Au Bon Pain. Whew.

Also I got a tip that Street Sense will not be running at Belmont. Hmm.....guess I'll have to choose another horse. Any suggestions?
